Did you know that the love of reading, not just the ability to read, is more predictive of school success than any other factor? During the summer of 2016, Frontier College will partner with First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) communities to provide free literacy camps to over 6,600 children from coast-to-coast. The camps respond to a need to reduce summer learning loss, which can occur if children do not use their reading and writing skills between the end of the school year and the beginning of the next.  The results show that campers return to school ready to learn, with greater confidence in their abilities and improved attitudes toward reading and learning. What seems like summertime fun and games actually prepares campers for school and life! Read more about our Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps.

Turn family game night, a birthday party or a rainy day activity with friends into a chance to support Frontier College. SCRABBLE® enthusiasts across Canada invite friends, family and neighbours to a friendly game of seven-letter words and triple-letter scores, then ask them to make a donation to Frontier College.  Whether it’s an office bash with forty word lovers or a living room gathering with your closest friends and neighbours, you can help make literacy a reality for Canadians in need. Open to novice and experienced wordsmiths, you do not need to be a Scrabble champ to help the cause! Register your party now!

To the rest of the country, he is known as His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. To his grandchildren, he is “Grandpa Book,” and that is who animatedly will read to a crowd of children and their parents at the launch of Storytime at Rideau Hall on Saturday, June 25th . This summer, every Friday and Saturday afternoon, Frontier College volunteers will welcome both local and visiting children to our Reading Tent on the grounds of Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s official residence in Ottawa. Kids and families can read by themselves, have a volunteer read to them in English or French, or participate in fun literacy activities. With the donation of the Governor General’s Literary Award-winning children’s books, along with books donated by Frontier College, children of all ages can enjoy settling in under the Reading Tent for an afternoon of fun.
